- Out of date sterile wipes have been removed and replaced with in date wipes. Designated person appointed to check First Aid boxes on a regular occurrence

- New stock immediately ordered. Additional stocks have been purchased over and above minimum required monthly checks to be completed to ensure adequate stock at all times

- (2) (a)(b) While first aid kits were present on site, there was no evidence that regular inventory checks of their contents had been completed, as a result a lot of the contents in the first aid box had expired. The absence of these checks could lead to expired or missing items being relied on in the event of an emergency, therefore delaying or compromising the required first aid response to the child

- (1) All first aid kits were immediately checked and restocked, removing expired items. Expired items were safely disposed of and replaced with current stock. Staff were reminded of the importance of regular checks and monitoring of first aid supplies. The issue was recorded and reported to management. Provider's corrective action:
- All expired bandages were removed from the first aid box and have replaced with new, in date supplies. The remaining contents of the first aid box were complete and appropriate, and additional items were replenished that were due to expire within the next number of months. To prevent reoccurrence, an explicit ‘expiry date’ record for bandages and other sterile items, now accompanies the existing monthly check. This ensures that any items with expiry dates will be monitored and replaced in advance

- First Aid materials were replaced with newly bought materials and placed into the first aid box. All first aid materials will be checked on monthly basis to ensure that they are all in date and in good working order. These will be checked and signed off by the Room Leader

- (2) (a) (b) The first aid materials available throughout the service did not contain sufficient amounts required for the number of children in attendance. Between the two first aid cupboards, there was a box of plasters and a range of bandages available. Safety pins were available in the office. The inspectors were advised that the first aid bag had been taken on the outing the day before the inspection and had not yet been taken back into the service. A similar non-compliance was identified at the last inspection 17/02/2022, where insufficient materials were available, and the registered provider's response of “The first aid box is fully stocked” is deemed to be insufficient in ensuring this non-compliance did not re-occur

- The first aid box was restocked the day after inspection. A list was drawn up to do a monthly stock check

Rainbow Nursery School, Letterkenny · Regulation 25 — First aid
- The registered provider did not ensure that a person trained in first aid response (FAR) for children, was immediately available at all times to the children attending the service. On the day of inspection there was one staff member present who held an in-date certificate in FAR. This staff member was rostered to begin work at 9:00am, whilst children arrived in the service from 8:45am onwards. The same staff member was rostered to take a lunch break from 11:45am to 12:00pm. During both these times there was no staff member available to the children who held in date training in FAR. It is acknowledged that the registered provider completed paediatric training immediately after the inspection and has registered to attend a first aid responder (FAR) for children course, to update their training
Provider's corrective action:
- In a written response the registered provider stated: (1) The person trained in first aid responder has changed hours from 9am to 14.00 to 8.45 – 13.45 to ensure that a FAR trained person is always available. The FAR trained person takes a 15-minute break on the premises during the session and is available if needed. The Far Training is scheduled for February and a staff member has agreed to attend the training. All staff members have completed paediatric first aid. The recruitment officer will have the responsibility for ensuring all mandatory training is up to date

- A new first aid box was purchased as well as a weekly checklist introduced that has to be signed and date weekly. Staff will check the dates on the first aid kit on a weekly basis to ensure adequate stock levels as well as the used by dates. This has been added to the risk assessment template

- (1) On the day of inspection, the service could not provide certified evidence that any staff member working in the service had completed up to date First Aid Responder training. An Immediate action notice was issued to the registered provider following the inspection in relation to this issue. Information received on 9 May 2025 confirmed that three staff members were enrolled to complete First Aid Responder training on the 17 and 18 May 2025 and the service would submit evidence to the inspectorate once completed

- (1) The registered provider did not ensure that a person trained in first aid response (FAR), was immediately available at all times to the children attending the service. There was one staff member who was trained in FAR, however this staff member was rostered to take a lunch break from 12:30 to 13:00 and to finish work at 16:00. During these times there was no staff member available to the children who is trained in FAR. It is acknowledged that evidence was available on the day of inspection indicating that four staff were trained in paediatric first aid
Provider's corrective action:
- It is important to clarify that all staff members in Shelly’s Childcare Ltd. are fully trained in Paediatric First Aid. It mentions four staff were trained but all staff in Shelly’s have this Cert. We have also now had a total of 8 staff members now trained in FAR since the inspection. We are now aware that Paediatric First Aid does not suffice, and you must have 1 FAR trained on the premises at all times as stated by the inspector. We since now have 8 staff members trained in FAR to ensure over 50% of our staff is now trained in FAR as well as their paediatric First Aid Qualification. 1 FAR trained staff member will be on the premises at all times

- This is now corrected, and the contents are added to the first aid box in the Naíonra. A note was taken of the expiry dates of these contents and a follow up will be done with the teacher to ensure that these contents are replaced in the service
