- The registered provider confirmed that annual maintenance was not carried out on the firefighting equipment or smoke alarms in the service. The maintenance checks on the smoke alarms was dated as 2024 and the firefighting equipment checks were carried out in 2021. This practice was at variance of the service’s own fire safety policy which stated that annual maintenance would be carried out. This posed an increased risk to the safety of the children and staff as the absence of regular maintenance may affect the effectiveness of the fire safety equipment and cause a delay in the event of an emergency evacuation
Provider's corrective action:
- The maintenance checks were carried out on 26 May 2026. To prevent this recurring, the registered provider has placed a reminder on calendar to ensure the service is completed on time

- (b) There was no record in place to demonstrate that the number, type and maintenance of firefighting equipment had been serviced in the past year. There was no record in place to demonstrate the smoke alarm had been serviced in the past year. This non-compliance was identified on previous inspections of the service on 6 March 2020 and 9 February 2023. It is acknowledged that confirmation both the fire alarm and the fire maintenance equipment were serviced shortly after the inspection was received by the inspector
Provider's corrective action:
- The registered provider has signed a contract with a fire maintenance company to ensure the regular maintenance of the fire equipment and fire alarm is carried out annually

- Staff when talking with the inspectors were not familiar with the requirement to carry out monthly fire drills. The last recorded fire drill was documented as having been carried out on 30 August 2024. Please refer to Regulation
- (b) While it is acknowledged that fire detection system was serviced, there was no record of the maintenance of the fire extinguishers. The last recorded date on the tag on the pin of both extinguishers was dated October 2023
- Fire evacuation procedures were not displayed in the individual rooms. Staff when speaking with the inspectors were unsure of the evacuation plan in the event of a fire emergency and where their fire assembly points were located. While an evacuation notice is displayed on the noticeboard in the hallway, the details relating to this were faded and not legible
Provider's corrective action:
- The registered provider submitted the following response to address the non-compliances: Corrective and Preventive Action Monthly fire drills have resumed. (b) The fire extinguishers are serviced annually
- Staff have been reminded of the emergency exits throughout the building and a notice of procedures to be carried out along with a map of the building is on display in each room
