Jerpoint Montessori, Thomastown · Regulation 22 — Food and drink
- During snack time many children were observed having foods which contained a high sugar content. Many children had foods such as chocolate spread on rice cakes, sweets, jellies and large quantities of juices which had been provided by parents. These foods are not recommended in preschool services
Provider's corrective action:
- An e mail was sent to parents outlining the findings of the inspection in relation to the provision of snacks and drinks in the service. Copies of the national guidelines on healthy eating were also sent to parents. Staff have hosted healthy eating days in the service in each of the preschool rooms. Children have been encouraged to sample fruit and vegetables prepared by staff. Children’s drink bottles are replenished with water as required during their time in the service. Staff will continue to encourage healthy eating in the service and discourage foods which are high in sugar

- The children who were attending on a part time basis were given a drink of water and a biscuit provided by the service as their second snack at 12:45. The snack provided for the children was not sufficent to meet their nutritional needs. Children who are attending a preschool service on a part time basis are required to be provided with a snack representing two food groups. The policy included the requirements for children who were attending on a part time basis to be provided with two snacks when they were attending the service
- The drinks for the children were kept in the fridge. The fridge was situated in the kitchenette which was secured with a safety gate which prevented children having free access to their drinks. Children attending a preschool, service are required to have access to their drinks at all times to ensure they are adequately hydrated
Provider's corrective action:
- A text message was sent to all parents following the inspection requesting parents to include an extra snack for their children who are attending the service on a parttime basis. The healthy eating policy in place in the service has been updated to include the addition of a snack for the children attending on a part time basis
- A drink station has been put in place in the service where children can now always access their drinks

Ballyhale Montessori School, Ballyhale · Regulation 22 — Food and drink
- 1.The children attending the Mighty Shamrocks room were observed having their snack at 10.45am. The inspector observed many of the children had snacks which were high in sugar. Snacks such as breakfast bars, sugar coated biscuits, yogurt drinks and chocolate coated biscuits were observed in many of the children’s lunch boxes. Many of the children were drinking juice from boxes which had been provided by their parents. The practice on the day of inspection was contrary to the services policy on healthy eating which discourages the provision of excessively processed food to children attending the service. 2. Freely accessible drinking water was not always available to the children on the day of inspection. It is acknowledged the children in the mighty shamrocks had drinks provided by their parents stored in the large fridge however children need access to drinks at all times while attending a preschool service
Provider's corrective action:
- The service has sent a message to all parents reminding them of the services healthy eating policy. Parents have been informed of the non-compliances found following the inspection in relation to the provision of nutritious food for children attending the service
- A designated “drink station” has been established for the children so that they can all always reach their own drinks. The drink stations are located in each room on a level that is accessible to the children at all times
