Regulation 23 — Safeguarding health, safety and welfare of child
- General Safety: 1. There was no safety lock on two presses containing hazardous cleaning materials and as a result these products were potentially accessible to children. It is acknowledged that once the risk was brought to the attention of the person in charge the cleaning products were removed and a new safety lock was installed by 2pm on the day of inspection. Safe Sleep: 2. Safe sleep practices for children under the age of two sleeping in cots were not carried out in line with Tusla safe sleep guidance or service policy which posed a risk to children’s safety. Three children were observed to be sleeping with comforters present in cots for a prolonged period which is not in line with safe sleep guidance. Action submitted by the Registered Provider
Provider's corrective action:
- General Safety: 1. All hazardous cleaning materials were removed from the lower storage presses and relocated to a higher shelf inaccessible to children. In addition, a safety lock was installed on the storage unit. These corrective actions were completed by 2:00pm on the day of the inspection. Regular health and safety checks will continue to include verification that all storage units containing hazardous materials are appropriately secured. Safe Sleep: 2. The finding was brought to the attention of the Person in Charge during the inspection. The comforters were removed immediately from the cots of the children concerned and staff were reminded of the requirements of the service's Safe Sleep Policy and Tusla Safe Sleep Guidance. Safe sleep practices have been added as a specific item to room supervision checks and management audits. The Person in Charge will continue to monitor compliance through regular observations and supervision to ensure ongoing adherence to the service's Safe Sleep Policy and Tusla Safe Sleep Guidance
