BASIC NEEDS: 1. The rest area in Montessori 2 was insufficient, with a mat and two cushions. This was located inside the door from the hall and was not sufficient for the number of children attending in this room to allow them to opt out of activities and rest when needed

Provider's corrective action:

1. Two child sized couches have been added to the room to allow children to rest and relax when they require same. The couches will be a permanent fixture in Montessori room 2

Infection Control: 1. A staff member was observed changing a pull up nappy without using gloves. The nappy changing procedure indicated that gloves must be worn, and the staff member acknowledged that they did not use gloves when changing pull-ups. They did however wash their hands after changing the child. This poses a risk of contamination and potential cross infection. Action submitted by the Registered Provider

Provider's corrective action:

Infection Control: 1. Staff have been reminded about the nappy changing procedure and this was discussed and reviewed at the team meeting where the nappy changing procedure was reviewed

(d) The soft matting outside was splitting. It had some repairs carried out since the last inspection however the spaces between each square remained a hazard. (e) Three hot water taps were not working, one in each of the children’s toilets and one in the nappy changing room. This reduced the opportunity for children to wash their hands comfortably in warm water

Provider's corrective action:

1. The matting on the playground has been repaired with soft matting granules and sealant. The registered provider has committed to ensuring the matting on the playground will be monitored and maintained as required. 2. The registered provider has stated all taps have been repaired by himself and stated that they will be monitored by the staff daily to ensure they are working and have hot water. The registered provider has stated that they have not been added to the checklist as they are to be monitored by the staff in each care room

Found compliant: Regulation 9, 10, 11, 25.

(2) (a) One of the references on file from a past employer was not validated. (b) One reference on file from a source other than a past employer was not validated. (d) Police vetting was not on file for one staff member that had resided outside of the jurisdiction for greater than 6 consecutive months. Not appropriately vetting staff prior to commencement in the service may allow staff who are not appropriate to work with children have access to the children

Provider's corrective action:

(2) (a) & (b) Both references have been validated. The registered provider has committed to ensuring all references will be validated prior to staff commencing in the service. (d) The curriculum vitae for the staff member requiring police vetting has been updated to reflect the times the person spent in another country outside of Ireland, on assessment of the curriculum vitae this person does not require police vetting

General Safety: 1. The soft matting outdoor area at the side of the building was lifting, the matting consisted of squares of soft matting placed together, these squares were lifting at the sides and were sticking up. This poses a risk of tripping to the children and adults using this area. Action submitted by the Registered Provider

Provider's corrective action:

General Safety: 1. The registered provider has committed to temporarily resetting the soft matting over the Christmas break and a more permanent solution is planned for the Easter break to ensuring the matting is suitable and not posing a trip hazard

(1) No staff member held up to date certification as a First Aid Responder. Not having staff up to date with appropriate first aid training may hinder the appropriate treatment given to a child in the event emergency is required

Provider's corrective action:

(1) The registered provider has provided evidence that he is sourcing FAR First aid training however as per the response on the corrective and preventive action submission this training is not available over the Christmas period and provisional times of January/February are set to deliver this training
