In the Waddling Ducks room, the low-level fridge which was used to store medication was not secured. The restrictive opening device which was previously in place had broken. This posed a risk of a child accessing the medication. Following discussion with staff, the medication was relocated to another fridge. Infection control: 2. Following two observed nappy changing procedures in the sanitary facility adjacent to the Doodlebugs room, the adult did not wash their hands and the children’s hands were not washed. This increased the risk of cross infection. The written nappy changing procedure did not specify that the children’s hands should be washed following each nappy change. Action submitted by the Registered Provider - General safety: 1. In her written response, the registered provider stated that a new lock has been fitted to the fridge. As a preventive measure, staff have been instructed to keep the fridge locked at all times. A note has also been placed on the fridge, as a reminder. Infection control: 2. The staff member in question has been retrained in the service’s nappy changing policy and procedure. All staff have been reminded of the procedures to be carried out when changing nappies. The nappy changing routine has been displayed over the changing station, as a reminder for staff to observe Found compliant: Regulation 9, 11, 16, 19, 25, 26, 28. #### Inspection of 7 December 2023 — Inspection Report Full report (PDF, Tusla) ##### Regulation 23 — Safeguarding health, safety and welfare of child - Safe Sleep: On the day of inspection, a high temperature was recorded in the Doodlebugs room. During sleep time when children were sleeping on stackable beds, a temperature of 24.4 degrees Celsius was noted. The high temperature had been brought to the attention on the registered provider earlier in the day of inspection when it was 24.7 degrees, above the acceptable range of 18 to 22 degrees. It is acknowledged that doors had been opened but the temperature remained high during sleep time. Secondly, the room thermometer was not operating accurately, it was recording a room temperature of 20 degrees Celsius. A high room temperature may be a safety risk to sleeping children. Neither is it comfortable to children when awake and active. Action submitted by the Registered Provider - & Evidence Submitted Safe Sleep: The registered provider responded to state that the underfloor heating time schedules and temperature were reduced. A new calibrated thermometer replaced the thermometer attached to the wall. Temperatures are now monitored throughout the day and recorded before the children go to bed. Photographic evidence of the newly purchased thermometer was submitted.
