Regulation 9 — Management and recruitment

  • (d) The required police vetting was not on file for one of the staff members, who had resided in another jurisdiction for a period that exceeded six consecutive months. (4) Evidence of attainment of a minimum level 5 award in Early Childhood Care and Education, was not available in respect of a one adult
Provider's corrective action:
  • The following statements were received from the manager;
  • (d) The staff member has applied for overseas police vetting from the appropriate authority in the country of residence at the time. All appropriate vetting will be in place prior to commencing employment going forward and a third staff member will review all vetting to ensure compliance. (4) The staff member is no longer working in the service

Regulation 23 — Safeguarding health, safety and welfare of child

  • Infection Control: (1) The inspector observed that twenty-three mattresses in the various sleep rooms were not waterproof or fitted with waterproof covers, posing a risk from leakages or accidents as the label on the mattresses stated that they may not prevent soakage. In conversation, management were unaware that there was no waterproof protection on the mattresses. (2) One of three cots situated in a small area in Sleep Room 3, off the Wobbler 1 care room, was less than the recommended 50 centimetres apart, being 30 centimetres from the nearest cot. This may pose a risk of cross contamination. Safe Sleep: (3) Four children, under twenty-four months, from the Playschool 2 care room, were observed resting in the Seomra Dearg sleep room on stackable beds, which are not suitable for use with children in this age group. In discussion, management were unaware of the specific sleep equipment for children in this age group. Action submitted by the Registered Provider
Provider's corrective action:
  • Infection Control: The following statements were received from the manager; (1) New waterproof mattress protectors have been purchased. Waterproof mattress protectors will be on all cots in the future. (2) The cot in the Sleep Room 3, off the Wobbler 1 care room has been removed. Safe Sleep: (3) The four children from the Playschool 2 care room who were sleeping on stackable beds in the Seomra Dearg sleep room are now sleeping in cots. The service’s sleep policy has been amended and staff have been informed that all children under 2 years require a cot in which to rest/sleep, unless a risk assessment and agreement with parents are in place for a child over 15 months to sleep on specific appropriate sleep equipment. Management will ensure that they keep up to date with all relevant information on sleep for children under 2 years
